Gaia at CDS

Gaia@CDS logo

This page presents how to access Gaia data available at CDS and summarizes CDS contribution to the Gaia mission.

As a partner data center, CDS publishes Gaia data when they are publicly available, at the same time as the official GACS archive at ESA.

Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3)

Gaia DR3 is available in CDS services since 13 June 2022. Access to data is provided in the following services:

  • VizieR provides a Web interface as well as Cone Search access to Gaia tables.
    Gaia DR3 in VizieR
Cone Search base URL for GaiaSource table:
    http://vizier.u-strasbg.fr/viz-bin/votable/-A?-out.all&-source=I%355%2Fgaiadr3&
  • TAP VizieR lets the user write (potentially sophisticated) ADQL queries against Gaia data.
    Gaia DR3 TAP access
TAP endpoint (to be used in TAP clients, eg Topcat or TAPHandle) is:
    http://tapvizier.u-strasbg.fr/TAPVizieR/tap/
  • the cross-match service offers fast spatial cross-identification with VizieR tables having positions or user-uploaded list of positions.
    • In this service, the main Gaia DR3 table is labeled GAIA DR3 (Epoch 2016) and is based on the original Gaia positions at epoch 2016.0, which are taken into account for the cross-match.
  • Aladin Desktop features a dedicated form for easy access to Gaia data. Proper motions of sources can be visualized.
Gaia DR3 dataset is also available as a HiPS progressive catalogue, seamlessly browsable from Aladin Desktop and Aladin Lite.

Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3)

Gaia EDR3 is available in CDS services since December 3rd 2020. Access to data is provided in the following services:

  • VizieR provides a Web interface as well as Cone Search access to Gaia tables.
    Gaia EDR3 in VizieR
Cone Search base URL for GaiaSource:
    http://vizier.u-strasbg.fr/viz-bin/votable/-A?-out.all&-source=I%350%2Fgaiaedr3&
  • TAP VizieR lets the user write (potentially sophisticated) ADQL queries against Gaia data.
    Gaia EDR3 TAP access
The GaiaSource table can be queried by TAP with the original column names by using the gaiaedr3 table name.
TAP endpoint (to be used in TAP clients, eg Topcat or TAPHandle) is:
    http://tapvizier.u-strasbg.fr/TAPVizieR/tap/
  • A command-line tool find_gaia_edr3 allows to query Gaia EDR3 by position, source ID or by constraints on the parallaxes, proper motions, fluxes, etc.
It also lets the user retrieve the values "unformatted", with the original precision and number of decimal digits.
  • the cross-match service offers fast spatial cross-identification with VizieR tables having positions or user-uploaded list of positions. Two versions of the GaiaSource table are available:
    • GAIA EDR3, in which Gaia positions have been precessed to epoch 2000 if proper motions data were available. This is suited for cross-matches with galactic objects having positions near epoch 2000.0 (typically large catalogues available in the service)
    • GAIA EDR3 J2016.0, in which the original Gaia positions at epoch 2016.0 are taken into account for the cross-match. This particularly suits extra-galactic studies or cross-matches with galactic objects whose position is near Gaia EDR3 epoch.
  • Aladin Desktop features a dedicated form for easy access to Gaia data. Proper motions of sources can be visualized.
Gaia EDR3 dataset is also available as a HiPS progressive catalogue, seamlessly browsable from Aladin Desktop and Aladin Lite.

  • Positions of Gaia EDR3 object names can be resolved using the Sesame service.

Cross-identification of SIMBAD with Gaia EDR3

The cross-identification between the SIMBAD database and the ESA Gaia mission Early Data Release 3 has been performed late 2021: 6.5 million objects have been updated.

Other EDR3 data products

MOCs (coverage maps) and HEALPix density maps are available for the main GaiaSource table.

A color flux map, built from the fluxes values in the table GaiaSource, can be visualised as a HiPS.

Gaia Data Release 2

Gaia DR2 is available in CDS services since April 25th 2018. Access to data is provided in the following services:

  • VizieR provides a Web interface as well as Cone Search access to Gaia tables.
    Gaia DR2 in VizieR
Cone Search base URL for GaiaSource:
    http://vizier.u-strasbg.fr/viz-bin/votable/-A?-out.all&-source=I%2F345%2Fgaia2&

    Gaia DR2 TAP access
TAP endpoint (to be used in TAP clients, eg Topcat or TAPHandle) is:
    http://tapvizier.u-strasbg.fr/TAPVizieR/tap/
  • A command-line tool find_gaia_dr2 allows to query Gaia DR2 by position, source ID or by constraints on the parallaxes, proper motions, fluxes, etc.
