Evolved stars with initial mass larger than about 20Mo. They are at the late stages of massive star evolution, after the red (less than 40Mo) or blue supergiant phases. It is not clear wether they are post- or pre- Wolf-Rayet stars. They show dramatic and unpredictable changes of their luminosity and temperature, to the exent that some have been confused with "faint" supernovae. Historically they were also called S Dor variables. They are thought to be the progenitors of type II, Ib, and Ic supernovae. -- CecileLoup - 2014-02-20 |
