ESO SIA&SSA Tutorial

1. Publishing combined image- and spectral-data packages:

The aim of this tutorial is to show how to publish images and spectra being part of a survey according to SIAP and SSAP standards. We will use ESO data coming from the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS): near-infrared imaging observations (ISAAC reduced images and WFI previews) and multi-object, optical to NIR spectroscopy (FORS2 spectra) in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-S).

Metadata Extraction and Ingestion Process

• Database setup
  • create SQL tables
• Mapping editor
  • get sample FITS file header per data type
  • define mappings between FITS keywords and IVOA models metadata
  • test mappings against sample FITS file headers

  • ingest FITS into database

Creation of services to access the data

• Previews generation and access by HTTP protocol
• Healpix index computation (used by the search algorithm)
• Vectors computation (used by the search algorithm)
• SIA setup
• Query on the SIA server
• SSA setup
• Query on the SSA server

2. Discovery of the SIA/SSA services with Aladin

Use Aladin to display the results from a specific query through SIA and SSA services. The spectral observations will be displayed on top of images and can be displayed through the Specview applet.
