Installing and configuring the gLite middleware

General Recommendations

A grid user does not need to install a full grid site to access the Grid. She just needs to install a User Interface (UI); it's a linux computer with all the client applications useful to use a grid environment. An Institute can provide one UI for all its users. There are two ways to install an UI:

  • Using the standard middleware installation tool (yaim) (see instruction below);
  • Using glite 3.1 UI as a tarball distribution. This distribution consists of two tarballs, one containing the glite software, the other containing external dependencies which are usually not installed on the host. The latter contains a string "external". The tarballs are versioned by the UI version and can be downloaded here.

Alternatively, it is possible to use desktop applications as gEclipse or Grid2Win.

On the other hand, the minimum setup for a Data Centre consists ofa UI and a Storage Element.
