Installing and configuring the gLite middleware
General Recommendations
A grid user does not need to install a full grid site to access the Grid. She just needs to install a User Interface (UI); it's a linux computer with all the client applications useful to use a grid environment.
An Institute can provide one UI for all its users. There are two ways to install an UI:
- Using the standard middleware installation tool (yaim) (see instruction below);
- Using glite 3.1 UI as a tarball distribution. This distribution consists of two tarballs, one containing the glite software, the other containing external dependencies which are usually not installed on the host. The latter contains a string "external". The tarballs are versioned by the UI version and can be downloaded here
.
Alternatively, it is possible to use desktop applications as
gEclipse
or
Grid2Win
.
On the other hand, the minimum setup for a Data Centre consists ofa UI and a Storage Element.
