EuroVO-DCA, Work Package 5: Coordination with computational GRID projects

WP5 Objectives

WP5 aims at achieving coordination between the VObs and the computational grid communities. WP5 organises the activities necessary to allow VObs users to exploit (through the data centres involved in the project) the processing capabilities offered by the computational Grid projects available in the countries participating in this proposal, or at the European level (e.g. EGEE, DEISA).

Description of Work

• Gathering information on the different mechanisms for users to access the individual computational Grid infrastructures (middleware, authentication procedures, user interfaces, etc) through contacts with various computational Grid projects;
• Performing preparatory studies on how to interface VObs computing tasks with the different computational Grids, through contacts with user communities (in coordination with WP4 and the TEG) and technical groups (e.g. VO-TECH);
• Fostering access by data centres to own national Grids, through the organisation of a dedicated workshop;
• Dissemination of the acquired knowledge at the WP3-organised Euro-VO Data Centre Workshops;
• Verifying that requirements from the VObs community are taken in the appropriate consideration by the individual computational Grid projects, through contacts with computational Grid projects and the GGF.

Month 26	Final Board-PCT meeting, 19&20 November 2008, Villafranca del Castillo, Madrid (Spain): assessment of WP5 activities and of deliverable D13 in preparation of the final Board meeting

The Grid and VO Workshop

The Virtual Observatory is rapidly evolving as a fundamental tool for the astronomical community. It may be seen as a Grid of federated astronomical databases. To process the huge amount of data residing in the Virtual Observatory it is necessary to provide an adequate amount of resources. The combination of the VObs and of the Grid technology is the right answer to this issue offering at the same time a complete and integrated working environment to the Astronomical and Astrophysical community.

The main goal of the workshop is to contribute to the integration of the Virtual Observatory and Grid e-science infrastructures and to the development of new Grid-aware astronomical applications. This workshop aims at contributing to the adoption of Grid and Virtual Observatory technologies by the Astronomical Data Centers.

Expected Results

• Diffusion of knowledge among European data centres about the different ways of using national and pan-European computational Grids from within the VObs framework
• Set of good practice suggestions for the development of astronomical application software which is interoperable with the computational Grid infrastructure(s)
• Acceptance of VO-DCA requirements by national and international projects
• Representation within coordinating bodies
