Project description

Astronomy produces great masses of distributed and heterogeneous data : files of the ground and space observatories, catalogues and numerical cartography of the sky, articles in the electronic newspapers. The Virtual Observatory projects aim at allowing an optimal scientific use of this information, but many technological bolts must be surmounted. The Masses project of Data in Astronomy (MDA) proposes collaboration between astronomy and IT laboratories in this context. It comprises three aspects:
  • (a) identification of the common problems, the installation of collaborations and actions for the diffusion of the results;
  • (b) a close cooperation to propose solutions, in particular in the fields of the knowledge bases, hyperspectral image reduction, distributed parallel calculations, distributed data storage, visualization of spherical data;
  • (c) the organization of meetings IT laboratories/laboratories of astronomy on technical topics of common interest
