GAVC (GASS Anomalous Velocity Cloud)

N: 295
Object:HVC  (SIMBAD class: HVCld = High-velocity Cloud)
Note:We are publishing a catalogue of high velocity clouds as discovered within the Galactic All Sky Survey (GASS) data. The catalogue paper is nearing submission and will contain a table of all HVCs found in GASS. We are submitting this application for a new acronym in order to facilitate reference to specific GASS HVCs in future follow-up work. The sensitivity of GASS to large scale structure as well as the way we identify HVCs using a floodfill sourcefinder makes a GHVC distinct from an HVC, in that our definition of a source may join several clouds that are connected at the 2 sigma level. Hence, we propose the new acronym GHVC to specifically designate a source as a GASS HVC, to make the origin of such a cloud clear. See GHVC.
We have also added a further classification to the name: either GASS High Velocity Cloud (GHVC) or GASS Anomalous Velocity Cloud (GAVC). This is because the GAVCs do not meet the standard velocity criteria of an HVC, and are best classified as an anomalous velocity cloud pending further investigation into their physical properties. This is also made clear in the paper.
