WALLABY (Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY)
Write:<<WALLABY JHHMMSS+DDMMSS>>
N: ∼500000
Object:HI
Note:The Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY (WALLABY) is one of two key surveys that are now running on the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP), which is an SKA precursor telescope located at the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory (MRO) in Western Australia. The aim of WALLABY is to use the wide-field phased-array technology of ASKAP to observe three-quarters of the whole sky in the 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen (or HI) at 30-arcsec resolution, thereby detecting and imaging the gas distribution in hundreds of thousands of external galaxies in the local Universe.

2019MNRAS.482.3591R: first reference with WALLABY sources.

Notes:The purpose of this request is to define a unique naming convention for HI sources detected in emission by the WALLABY survey on ASKAP, which is a shallow HI all-sky survey expected to cover the entire sky south of a declination of +30 degrees. Given the comparatively large size of the ASKAP PSF (∼30 arcsec FWHM) in combination with the low number density of HI sources in the sky expected to be detected by WALLABY (on average ∼10-20 per square degree), it will be sufficient to specify the coordinate part of the source name to an accuracy of integer seconds in RA and integer arcsec in Dec.
