Details on Acronym:   XAU

XAU (XMM-Newton, individual researchers) (Not yet in Simbad)
Write:<<XAU JHHMMSS.s+DDMMSS>>
Object:UV + Blue  (SIMBAD class: Unknown = Object of Unknown Nature)
Notes:In preparation.
The XMM-Newton Observatory will produce serendipitous catalogues of hundreds of UV/optical detections made with the Optical Monitor instrument co-aligned with, and operated in parallel with the X-ray instruments of the Observatory.
Designation XAU is intended to be used for those serendipitous sources which need to be referenced in a paper.
While the eventual comprehensive catalogues will be produced by pipeline-processing of data by the XMM Survey Science Centre, with the XMM acronym (see also XMMU), we recommend this current designation scheme for informal identification in individual fields' publications.
For work involving exploitation of the full set of serendipitously detected sources in one or multiple XMM-Newton fields we recommend the XMMAA, XMMAAA, etc. approach, where AA or AAA represent the authors' initials, and should be used for large interim surveys provided that the authors have submitted their acronym to the Acronym Registry (for further details see the IAU Specifications for Nomenclature web page).
